Artist’s Statement

This mixed-media work began with a photograph I took of a grave monument in Bonaventure Cemetery while visiting colleges with my daughter. It explores the tension between permanence and decay, and stillness and flight, and became a symbol of my own anticipatory loss as my daughter prepared to leave home. Gouache and charcoal transform the setting, with birds evoking departure, uncertainty, and freedom. Layers of silver-mica-infused resin create depth, echoing the accumulation of time and remembrance. The piece blurs the boundary between documentation and imagination, inviting viewers to consider how women transform grief, change, and separation into hope and strength.
