Artist’s Statement

Moderna 2 (Sketch for Home) reduces a Caracas apartment building to a structure of balconies, voids, and light. It belongs to my ongoing research into Venezuelan modernist architecture, built on oil wealth, and the gap between its utopian promise and the political reality that followed. I painted it from memory and from a distance: it is a sketch of the home I inhabit from afar. The oil paint, applied in thick, gestural impasto, mimics concrete and stucco. The red lines beneath the white and black recall what the façade conceals. Material becomes a place.
