Artist’s Statement

My work explores inheritance, privilege, exclusion, and feminine agency, drawing on my familial history and experience, evoking the realities of the 1947 Partition, and women's role in Indian culture. A woven gilded cot with door carving inspired by my ancestral home lies flat as a communal seat. Materials: jute, wood, gold, carrying histories of touch and taboo, revealing gendered inheritance and caste-based exclusion, invite sitting and touch as negotiated acts toward shared belonging. The video stages the intimate, ritualized moment of a marriage’s first night. The bride sits shy, nervous, expectant. It renders questioning visibility, touch, cultural expectation, and vulnerability.
