Artist’s Statement

My work revolves around how the black experiences navigates, trauma, healing and the inter and intrapersonal relationships it shapes. Losing both of my parents caused me to use art as a vehicle of therapy and allows me to express things that are personal while at the same time, finding a through line of universality that brings others together. Material choices deepen the connection in these two pieces in particular. Generally, I combine traditional and modern techniques to bridge the generational gab of the old and new, especially when speaking of my parents. Cerebral Play is an about my father, who was a carpenter so I used his material of expression, wood, with newer tools, the CNC router and the laser cutter. Trinity (Ties that Bind) gives a deeply personal view of my relationship with my parents so I used materials, such as used hospital gowns and the technique of using a computerized long arm quilting machine to design the quilting patterns, each connected to the silhouette on the quilt.
