Artist’s Statement

Cityscape was a site-specific installation, originally made for a space in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, TX. Living in a city has shaped how I experience land, and that experience influences how I understand heat and its effects. Currently this neighborhood has been undergoing a lot of construction. The installation is a map of Dallas made with natural dyes on silk fabric. The work is about the “heat islands” that exist in our city. I used iron and aluminum acetate to create the Dallas roadways to highlight urban development and how it eats away at the land.
