Artist’s Statement

Guardian is a hybrid vessel and imagined protector of the home, drawing from the history of guardians that stand between vulnerability and safety. Combining a horse and bird with armor and a helmet, the figure explores protection, defense, memory, and the desire to safeguard those we love. The drawn markings function as a symbolic force field, referencing traditions of marking bodies for protection. Made from Sandia earthenware clay from the Southwest, the work connects protection to land, home, and place. Its reflective chrome armor contrasts with the earth, while its fragility reminds us that even what protects us remains vulnerable.
