Artist’s Statement

This work, Propitiation, was created during a time of prayer and reflection on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. With solemn reverence, I cut squares of chest x-rays from an outdated medical textbook. I soaked the red cloth covers off discarded books, then ripped and nailed the pieces to the panel at the points of the sign of the cross. As I worked, I felt a visceral sorrow and deep appreciation for the events that took place nearly 2,000 years ago.
