Artist’s Statement

“Where are you from?” is a question I was asked growing up on the East Coast of the United States, far from my mother’s ancestral home in Texas and my father’s country of origin, the Philippines. from the Sea of Cochineal is a portrait of me at age nine, the year I decided to become an artist. The materials, silk and cochineal dye, reference my ancestry. But it is the sea that holds a powerful place in my memories. Vessels—whether boats, containers, or ephemeral structures—carry memory, holding stories that move across time and space.
