Artist’s Statement

This piece was inspired by birthday gifts from dear friends: flowers, two sheets of watercolor paper, and cake for lunch. The flowers became the starting point, connecting the two pieces of paper. The odalisques were drawn from female nudes in an art history book. In my painting, I imagine them after work, fully dressed and sitting beneath a pink moon as they share tea and cake. The two friends are having a private conversation with shared experience in an intimate space away from a judgmental culture.
