Artist’s Statement

This body of work fuses Rothko's saturated color field palette with the "off-air" TV test pattern. It continues a "meeting" I first had with Rothko's Seagram Murals at the Tate, light as a place where two sadnesses meet. Presence and absence, light as a particle and a wave, and the passage of time all remain central threads. This work began after my 2020 show Light Migrations, just before the pandemic pause, which mirrored the test pattern's suspended waiting with nothing transmitted. Returning to Rothko's palettes let me hold that feeling in color, not words. It reclaims a symbol of absence, a broadcast going dark as color, light, and feeling. The use of Dye sublimation on metal furthers this idea by fixing a fraction of a second light projection into permanence. The print doesn't just document the light — it stops it from going dark again.
