Artist’s Statement

Between Returns begins with a photograph of my father and his friends in Thailand, suspended somewhere between Vietnam and America, between the life he had left and the one still waiting for him. I’m drawn to the strange intimacy of an image that existed before I did, a moment I know only through what remains. Lifted from its original surface, the Polaroid emulsion rests on glass, casting a second shadow behind it, close enough to see but impossible to hold. Like the memory itself, it reaches me only in traces, always returning, never quite the same.
